Money $aving Water Heater Tips

The heating and cooling system (HVAC) in your home is the largest consumer of your household energy. The water heater is second, consuming approximately 18% of the energy cost per home. Here are some ways to save money via your water heating expenses.

  • Replace that old water heater with an energy efficient model. Energy Star is they symbol to look for, it means that the appliance meets or exceeds the requirements of energy efficiency set forth by the EPA. The intention of the Energy Star appliance (water heater) is to save the homeowner energy every month, enough energy that the appliance will “pay for itself” in savings over the lifetime of the appliance.
  • Protect your water heater by insulating it. Just like the walls in your home protects your interior from the cold and heat, a well-insulated water heater does not have to work as hard/often to keep the water at the desired temperature. This can be accomplished by insulating the exterior of the tank; insulated “blankets” are available for purchase. Many hot water heaters reside in the basement of homes, where the open room is often unheated, thus requiring the water heater to work more often.
  • Conserve hot water by utilizing “Low Flow” faucets, shower heads, clothes washers and appliances. The amount of water heated every month greatly affects your energy bill. Reduce your monthly expenses by installing water saving appliances.
  • Turn down the temperature of your hot water. There is a thermostat that controls how hot your water actually is. Adjust the thermostat down a few degrees and try it for a month, if you find the new water temperature comfortable, try adjusting down a little more. Once you determine the suitable temperature of your water, you may be pleasantly surprised at the savings.

I will be happy to visit your home and provide an energy saving inspection and make recommendations on how your monthly energy costs can be reduced.
